Seconds out....round two!

Written by: on 13th Jul 2009

It's Monday evening and I've just done my second workout.  Admittedly, I am late in doing the second one, although, to be fair, I am due to do two a week and my last one was Tuesday afternoon of last week, so I just about got there.  Although, I suppose that I really ought to make it three times a week (this is the point where I'll realise that I should have been doing three all along!).

In all honesty as well, I must admit that exercise was the last thing on my mind over the weekend after an intensive and frustrating week of work (I'll leave it at that....I could go on!) which prevented me from doing a second workout during a school night.  My main objective on Friday night was to get completely inebriated.  All I can say, dear reader, is mission accomplished!  I'm too ashamed to even admit how much I drank, but I certainly exceeded my personal best.  I clearly am overly partial to Vesper Martinis.    I did something rather similar on Saturday night (although nowhere near as on Friday) when some friends came to visit and we vegged out with chinese take out and pinot grigio. So, suffice to say, come Sunday, in all honesty exercise was not on my list of priorities.

If you've read my last blog, you will have seen that I was suffering a bit after my first workout.  I was perplexed as to why I thought that my legs were suffering when I climbed the stairs, but that was nothing in comparison to what I felt when going back down the stairs!  With that in mind, I have to say that I wasn't feeling particularly enthused at the possibility of feeling like I was walking around like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz again, plus I've had what at best can be described as a somewhat challenging day at work again today (what a way to start the week).  I was fancying just getting home and crawling into bed, but then remembered how genuinely good I felt after my first workout and thought that it would help me get some frustration out if I were to work out again.  I definitely made the right choice.  I also shocked myself in that for once I was the one pushing to do the exercise.  My work out buddy Mike has been the one trying to get me enthused and the poor thing has had to put up with my coming up with every excuse in the book to avoid exercise but this time it was me encouraging him!  I bet that won't happen again - this is more than likely to be a one time only event (definitely worth blogging that one then!)

So, after nagging Mike, I arrived at his place ready to go (well, almost!)  Given that I've already got one work out under my belt, I was more prepared for what to expect and I have to say that the 30 seconds of squat thrusts seemed to pass considerably more quickly than it felt like in the first attempt.  Those who know me will know that that is I sentence I never thought I'd write!

Whilst first time round, I was dreading the end of the warm up stretches as that meant that the serious business was starting, this time, I was looking forward to getting stuck in.  I also had a surprise when I found that this time I was almost able to touch my toes (well, the top of my trainers) during my  standing hamstring and lower back stretch this week - a great improvement from the pathetic attempt that had me just about touching my shins last week.

I must admit that with the dynamic lunge with dumbells, I found the 2.5's too challenging again and so just did the lunges on their own again.  This was easier than last time, so next time I'll try them with lighter dumbells.  The same can be said for the seated bicep curl.  I did the first lot of 13 reps ok but the second set were too much for me to get beyond 8.  Again, I'll think about getting some lighter ones for next time.

So, second one down, let's hope that I won't be as stiff tomorrow as last time.  It doesn't look good in work when you're walking around like C-3PO!
